Welcome to 1st Grade!
Literacy and Writing
Literacy
Guided Reading
Students will be working in Guided Reading groups where s/he will be reading text at his/her instructional reading level. The focus of these groups will be to guide readers to practice and learn reading strategies while focusing on fluency and comprehension. As the year progresses, information on reading strategies will be sent home.
Daily Five
Students will be introduced to 5 literacy activities during our Guided Reading/Literacy Block. They include: read to self, work on writing, read to someone, listen to reading, and word work. “Daily 5” routine will give students independent practice while the teacher works with reading groups
Writer's Workshop & Writing across the Curriculum
Writer’s Workshop
The children are encouraged to write from the beginning of the school year by sounding out words and writing the sounds they hear. These early spellings may be called “temporary spelling”, “kid’s spelling”, or “Word’s under construction”. Writing early empowers children to experiment with language and write about their own experiences without being limited to the few words they may already know how to spell. We will be learning that authors write for a purpose with a focus on fiction and non-fiction writing opportunities throughout the year.
Each writer’s workshop session will begin with a mini-lesson which encourages our young writers to try something new in their writing and end with a sharing time for the authors to share their ideas and work with one another.
Shared Writing
As students share ideas for a story, chart or poem, the teacher will write them on paper for the class to see, read and reread.
Interactive Writing
This activity allows both the students and teacher to “share the pen.” The students are encouraged to write about a topic relevant to their lives including a response to a book the class has read or a sentence or two about a field trip, for example. This activity allows students to become risk takers while learning many elements of writing.
Guided Writing
This time is allotted for the teacher to meet in a small group with students having similar writing needs. During this time, the small group will focus on a particular area of their writing.
SPELL- Links & Word Study
SPELL-Links
Our first grade team uses a phonics program called, “SPELL-Links”. It teaches the typical sounds and other allowable spellings for the sound. This program makes implementation of words study activities quick, easy and enjoyable for the whole class.
“The SPELL-Links program features a collection of grade-level classroom activities that teach words study knowledge, skills and strategies; improve spelling, word decoding and reading fluency; build vocabulary; and enhance writing performance. “ -SPELL-Links to Reading & Writing Overview 2014
First Grade
100 Sight Words
Students will be introduced to the 100 most commonly used sight words in first grade. These words are not easily “sounded out” and do not follow spelling generalizations. Sight word activities will be part of our routine in class through the use of a Word Wall for students to learn and utilize throughout the year.
