What does it mean to be an American citizen?

In first grade, children listen to and read folk tales and true stories from America and from around the world. They learn about major historical events, figures, and symbols related to the United States of America and its national holidays and why they are important to Americans. The curriculum continues to strengthen children’s identity as American citizens, and expand our understanding of what it means to be an American by learning about…

• our past (American folk tales and legends, famous people in history, and the reasons why American Holidays are celebrated),

• our present (having a special focus on being a good citizen in our neighborhood community and school community; and develop an understanding of how we fit together as a classroom community as the beginning of an understanding of how we are part of society),

• our country (American symbols and map skills, good citizenship, changes over time, compare now and then).
